AT VIENNA SHORTS, THERE ARE A TOTAL OF CASH AND MATERIAL PRIZES WORTH APPROXIMATELY EUR 30,000 TO BE WON. THE FILMS AWARDED BY US ARE ELIGIBLE FOR NOMINATIONS FOR THE OSCARS®, THE EUROPEAN FILM AWARDS, THE BRITISH FILM AWARDS BAFTA, AND THE AUSTRIAN FILM AWARDS.


For the 22nd edition of the international short film festival (May 27 to June 1, 2025), films can be submitted for two international competitions, two national competitions, as well as for non-competitive program sections (outside the competition).

The REGULAR DEADLINE for all submissions is January 5, 2025; the extended deadline is January 31, 2025. Submission fees apply to all entries (ranging from 5 to 18 euros). Please read the submission conditions carefully in advance.

For the 2025 festival, there is also an additional competition celebrating the 200th birthday of composer Johann Strauss II: DONAU SO BLAU.

Films of all genres produced in Austria, with Austrian participation or by Austrian filmmakers

We ask all Austrian filmmakers to submit for the Austrian Competition or the Austrian Music Video Award. The films will be forwarded to the respective sections if they are eligible for other categories.

NON-COMPETITIVE SECTION

Entries are also possible for non-competitive festival sections. Films are eligible for this category if they either do not meet the conditions of the competition categories, are not intended for a competition presentation and can be assigned to one of the following categories:

  • Late Night Movies – The category Late Night Movies includes the genres of trash film (Très chic), horror film (Nightmares), and erotic films (Kinky Kino)
  • International Music Videos
  • Films For Kids – Films suitable for kids from ages 3 to 12 years old (and specific age groups within this range).
  • Films For Young People – Films suitable for young people from ages 13 to 21 years old (and specific age groups within this range).

Films of all genres and formats up to a length of 45 minutes and with a completion date after January 1, 2023 are accepted for this category.

All films already submitted for a competition will be screened for all festival categories and do not need to be additionally submitted in that category.

Key Requirements at a Glance:

  • All genres and formats are welcome
  • Maximum length: 30 minutes (competition) or 45 minutes (non-competitive)
    Completed in 2024/25 (competition) or after January 1, 2023 (non-competitive)
  • Rough and work-in-progress cuts are accepted (after picture lock)
  • Premiere is not required; competition films must not be publicly screened in Vienna between January and May 2025 (except at the Tricky Women Festival)
  • All films must have English subtitles (even if the films are in German or English)
  • It must be ensured that no third-party rights are violated by the submission or potential screening at the festival
  • Submissions are only possible digitally – either through the festival’s own platform Filmchief or via the submission platform FilmFreeway
