Competition 2021: 90 films from 34 countries

A total of 90 films from 34 countries are represented in the four competition categories of the 18th edition of Vienna Shorts. The films were selected from nearly 5,000 submissions from all over the world. Exactly half of the works come from male and half from female filmmakers.

The two international competition categories “Fiction & Documentary” and “Animation Avantgarde” feature a total of 50 films, including nine with German participation and ten from North, Central and Latin America. Among the selected directors are some well-known names from the industry, such as Jennifer Reeder, Dominga Sotomayor, Paul Bush and Andreas Hykade.

This year, 24 films of all genres have been selected for the “Austrian Competition”. The 16-video line-up of the "Austrian Music Video Award", in turn, includes works for Conchita Wurst & Lou Asril, Kruder & Dorfmeister, Mira Lu Kovacs and Ja, Panik, among others. The Viennese duo EsRAP will also perform live at Porgy & Bess on the occasion of their latest music video.

A total of around 20,000 euros in prize money will be awarded in the festival's four competitions. The selection for the online competition “New Point of View”, which is organized together with the festivals Go Short, Short Waves and the Short Film Festival Oberhausen, was already published in mid-March. Another 8,000 euros in prize money is at stake here.
