Seven weeks before the start of our 20th edition, we are happy to present this year’s nominated films. From more than 6,000 submissions, our programmers selected 95 films from 34 countries for four competitions.

Congratulations to all nominees and a big thank you to all submitters for their trust, to the selection teams for several weeks of viewing films, to our jury members for donating their time and expertise in June, and to our award donors who have increased the monetary value of “their” awards almost across the board this year.

FIDO & AA: OUR INTERNATIONAL COMPETITIONS

Marvel with us at the present and future of cinema: 30 films from 21 countries have been selected for the Fiction & Documentary competition, 28 experimental and/or animated works from 19 countries have made it into the final selection in the Animation Avantgarde competition. Recognize familiar styles and names or discover young filmmakers like Yoko Yuki or Francesca de Fusco, who are participating in VIENNA SHORTS for the first time. Surprisingly strongly represented in the final selection are productions from Finland, Switzerland and Hungary, while outside Europe we look to Rwanda, Japan or Colombia, among others.

ÖW & MUVI: OUR NATIONAL COMPETITIONS

Look forward to 22 ambitious and courageous short films from Austria: The nominated films in the Austrian Competition show protagonists in transition, capture Austrian peculiarities or tackle the topics of work and social class. There is everything between short experiments and “long” short films, while music videos lasting six or seven minutes can be considered long: 15 films are in the race for the 11th Austrian Music Video Award, including videos for HVOB, KEROSIN 95, KeKe, W1ZE and many more. Once again we celebrate the music video nominees with a screening, live concert and the award ceremony on festival Saturday (June 3)—will you be there?
