Six weeks before the 19th edition of VIENNA SHORTS starts, we are happy to share the final selection for the competitions with you: Our programmers have selected 94 films from 34 countries from more than 5,000 submissions for Fiction & Documentary, Animation Avantgarde, Austrian Competition and Austrian Music Video Award. A big thank you to all submitters and congratulations to the nominees, for whom about 20,000 Euros in prize money and qualifications for the Oscars and the European Film Awards are at stake. So: Browse through the competition films and marvel at them from May 25 on the big screen!

INTERNATIONAL COMPETITIONS

We take you on a cinematic journey around the world: The 29 films in the Fiction & Documentary competition come from 25 countries, from Argentina to Nigeria to South Korea. Exactly half of the 34 directors are women and most of the filmmakers are represented at VIENNA SHORTS for the first time. In the Animation Avantgarde competition, on the other hand, you will find many well-known (festival) names, such as Réka Bucsi, Nikita Diakur and Sophie Koko Gate. Their latest works are among the 26 experimental and/or animated works from 14 countries that made it into the final selection.

NATIONAL COMPETITIONS

Our programmers’ hearts often bleed when it comes to the final selection. This year’s shortlist for the Austrian competition was already so high-caliber that every film deserved a place. The final 21 films include everything from colorful experiments to “long” short fiction films. The 18 films in the running for the Austrian Music Video Award, which is being presented for the 10th time this year, are all short and crisp. Included are music videos for Anthea, HVOB, Klangkarussell, Attwenger and many more. We celebrate the anniversary with a big music video gala on festival Friday (May 27) including a screening, a live concert and the award ceremony—we hope you'll be there!
