It is the longing for comfort that Yann Gonzalez expresses with his festival trailer Friends on Fire. His friends are engulfed in flames. Or are they banding together against the fire? Or are they and their children setting the earth ablaze themselves—for an imminent revolution? In the end, the open eyes of the beloved provide comfort and hope.

“In these times of bellicosity, massacres, dictatorships, rising fascism, and extreme right-wing movements, my most important protection is the presence of my friends, the warmth and knowledge in their eyes,” writes Gonzalez. “Capturing their gaze on 16mm film is a form of solace against endless doom.”
