LONGING FOR EQUALITY: JYOTI MISTRY
The work of Jyoti Mistry (born in 1970 in South Africa)––whose most recent films were co-produced in Austria––is known for its uncompromising boldness, a quality that earned Mistry the Austrian Short Film Award for Cause of Death in 2020. The artist ingeniously intertwines footage from colonial archives, travel documentaries, and amateur films with animation and spoken word, crafting poetic and impactful commentaries on power dynamics, exploitation, and historical as well as contemporary contexts. At the festival, in collaboration with the Filmmuseum and sixpackfilm, we proudly present her trilogy We Come In Peace, They Said, featuring Cause of Death, When I Grow Up I Want To Be A Black Man (2017), and her latest masterpiece Loving in Between (2023) for the first time in Austria.
