THE WINNERS OF Fiction & Documentary
The winner of the Vienna Short Film Award (endowed with € 5,000) is “La historia se escribe de noche” by Cuban director Alejandro Alonso Estrella, which documents a pervasive darkness in which the haunting visions of the director's mother resound. The documentary-poetic work manages to “realize its visions in the darkness and fight against the night that threatens to swallow us all,” according to the jury. The Jury Prize for Best Cinematography, endowed with € 1,500, went to Benoît Pain for his work on “Oyu" by Atsushi Hirai. This year, the jury awards not just one, but three Honorable Mentions: these go to “White Cloud" by Emmanuel Van der Auwera, “Cross My Heart and Hope To Die” by Sam Manacsa, and “Pigeons are dying, when the city is on fire” by Stavros Markoulakis. The audience chose “Unwanted Kinship” (Ungewollte Verwandtschaft) by Pavel Mozhar as their favorite. Here is the link to all the awards and jury justifications.
