BEST CRITICS: EUROPEAN WORKSHOP FOR FILM CRITICISM

Are you a cineaste or movie aficionado with strong writing skills? Are you already considered a film critic in your circle of friends and you want to put your passion into text form? Then apply NOW until February 29, 12:00 AM for our European Workshop for Film Criticism!

The European Network for Film Discourse (The END) and the short film magazine Talking Shorts are organizing the fourth edition of the European Workshop for Film Criticism: In consecutive two-week workshops at Filmfest Dresden (16 to 21 April 2024) and VIENNA SHORTS (28 May to 2 June 2024), you will learn the basic craft of film criticism through short films and curated programmes, guided by established critics, festival programmers and filmmakers.

The writing process will be accompanied editorially during the festivals, and a selection of the texts will be published on Talking Shorts. The working language is English. The workshops are funded by the EU's MEDIA program and are a collaboration between the European Network for Film Discourse (THE END) and the online platform Talking Shorts - both co-founded by yours truly, VIENNA SHORTS. Anas Sareen (Programmer for Berlinale Generation and on the editorial board of Talking Shorts. This summer he will shoot his second short film, The Gods).

Participation & offer:


The workshop is aimed at anyone over the age of 18 who is interested in critical and discursive work on (short) films and can participate in both units of the tandem workshop. The participation fee is € 150,- in total. (We do not want to exclude anyone. If the participation fee is too high for you, please contact us).

The offer of both festivals includes: 5-night accommodation in Vienna and Dresden, travel expenses (up to € 150,-), meals during the workshop sessions (breakfast and lunch) as well as free accreditation (and thus access to all film screenings and other events of the festivals).

Please note that additional documents, such as a CV in English, must be attached during the application process. A writing sample, be it a short review or an essay, is mandatory to assess the applicants' writing skills.

Selection procedure:


Six participants will be selected for the European Film Critics Workshop #4. Each application will be reviewed by at least two different editors.

Applications cannot be withdrawn after selection, except in exceptional cases by the workshop organizers
Organizers reserve the right not to provide feedback, comments or other information about the selection or non-selection of applications.
