21. Vienna Shorts

What Are You Longing For?

Under the motto "What Are You Longing For?", VIENNA SHORTS dedicated the 21st edition of the festival to longing as an inner driving force and the need for more: more peace, more security, more paradise.

More than 300 films were on the program at the 21st edition, around a third of them in competition for prize money of almost € 30,000, the qualification for the Oscars®, the European and the Austrian Film Awards. For the second time, freshly planted tree trophies were dedicated to the winners.

After returning to the MuseumsQuartier Wien last year, the MQ once again became the festival's main venue. The main courtyard was used for an open-air program on four evenings. The Milieukino, a truck converted into a mobile cinema, was also located in the main courtyard. New additions included the Ovalhalle for live performances on Saturday evenings; and the ASIFAkeil in Electric Avenue served as the venue for an animation performance including a subsequent exhibition. Not far away, in Room D, was the Festival Center, the daily contact point for accredited and industry guests.

The boundary-crossing filmmaker and provocative genre auteur Yann Gonzalez (FR) was honored with a portrait, as was the celebrated and uncompromising artist Jyoti Mistry (ZA). As a third portrait, two shorter works by Amos Gitai (IL) were shown in cooperation with the Austrian Film Museum as part of the large Gitai retrospective.

There were also Current Comments for those interested in politics, Late Night for genre-savvy night owls, live audiovisual performances and a formidable children's and youth program.

Friends on fire, friends against fire, friends and their kids setting fire – for a future revolution?
And at the end the opening eyes of the boy I love. A festival trailer is often a way to synthesize where you're at, what's on your mind, how is the world affecting you. In those times of bellicism, massacres, dictatures, rise of fascism and extreme rights, my main shelter is the presence of my friends, the warmth and knowledge of their eyes. Capturing their gazes on 16mm film as a form of consolation from endless disaster.

The trailer was created with the support of MuseumsQuartier.
