14. Vienna Shorts

Trust me

In the spirit of deliberate focus on the essential, artistic brevity and narrative density, the 14th festival edition took place for the first time under the shortened name Vienna Shorts: Around 350 carefully selected short films, animations and music videos could be seen over six days in competitions, personals, live performances and special programs.

With its focus on Trust Me, the festival posed the question of trust, not least because at that time of Donald Trump being elected US president faith in democratic institutions and political processes seemed to be visibly dwindling. We explored how (lack of) trust is reflected in current and historical films in five programs, among others together with our partner festivals from Uppsala (Sweden) and ZubrOFFka from Białystok (Poland). Meanwhile, this year’s Spotlights were dedicated to three idiosyncratic artists: Makino Takashi, Jacqueline Lentzou and Alexandre Larose.

TRAILER

Trailer #1 & Trailer #2

(Duncan Cowles & Ross Hogg, UK 2017, 01:22 min)

The 2017 VIS trailers were created with seemingly little effort—after all, Scottish filmmakers and good friends Duncan Cowles and Ross Hogg simply sat down in front of the camera on the sofa and on a nearby beach. The result is nonetheless (or perhaps because of it) legendary.

The trailer was created with the support of Q21 at MuseumsQuartier.
