7. Vienna Shorts
Film Dance Rhythm
The (darned) seventh year brought great innovations to VIS Vienna Independent Shorts. The Metro Kino advanced to the new main venue and for the first time and the competition program was divided into three sections for the first time: The international competition for fictional and documentary works, henceforth called Fiction & Documentary, was joined by the international competition for animation, experimental film and digital media, Animation Avantgarde for short (curated by Thomas Renoldner, among others), and a separate Austrian competition with the first-ever Austrian Short Film Award. A total of 90 works from more than 20 countries were screened in the three competition categories.
As part of the musical-rhythmic focus Film Dance Rhythm, tribute programs were dedicated to the great dance filmmaker Miranda Pennell and the work of Kubelka student Thomas Draschan. As another highlight, animated pictures were “brought to dance” with live music in the Reformed City Church not far from the Metro Kino. Speaking of music: The most popular short film branch, the music video, was given more space for the first time in 2010—but the Austrian Music Video Award was not to be initiated until a few years later ...

VIS Trailer 2010
(Adnan Popovic, AT 2010, 00:58 min)
The shoulder wave at lego men! Adnan Popovic has accomplished this feat with his trailer for VIS 2010, with trashy dancing on a mirror tray and framed by projected disco ambience. With “Waltz King” set to music by Laokoongruppe, the graduate of Vienna’s Academy of Fine Arts had previously earned a reputation as a meticulous worker and, at the same time, a highly creative mind. Popovic later demonstratively turned his back on the music video genre with “Tinamv1” (This is not a music video 1)—but not on the elaborate and perfectionist choreography. His VIS trailer also won the Content Award.
