VIS Vienna Independent Shorts

International Competition

The international competition constitutes the core of the festival. Almost 50 short films from all over the world are presented in six compilations. The winners of the Short Film Award of the City of Vienna (Golden Shorts) and of the audience award are to be  announced on the closing day of the festival.

 

International Competition 1

May 17th, 2008, 9 p.m. - Top Kino
Animals with hearts, but no sexual desire; football fans who’s loyalty is tested in the face of descent; books and tomatoes that fire the imagination – welcome to the realm of love. Here we will come across seven films from seven countries that incite passion or document, in a very charming manner, that not yet everything has been said about the most talked about (and filmed) topic in the world.

International Competition 2

May 18th, 2008, 9 p.m. - Top Kino (ANIMATION NIGHT)
The factory of animation is buzzing, pinions clatter, motionless objects are brought to life: Between "simple" stop-motion and highly technical 3D figures, colours and forms beat in time to the projector’s rhythm in 24 pictures per second, between absurd shenanigans and political abstractions the high art of subtle hinting is cultivated. Nine films from seven countries whisk us away into the world of animated films.

International Competition 3

May 19th, 2008, 9 p.m. - Top Kino
We will come across several really odd fish in this programme, which ranges between voluntary isolation and not quite so voluntary loneliness, between absurd lifeworlds and precarious work environments. Seven excellent examples that demonstrate the fact that simple reluctance and tragic impossibility can be found quite close together at times.

International Competition 4

May 20th, 2008, 9 p.m. - Top Kino (EXPERIMENTAL NIGHT)
The following films are exemplary for the present zest for dealing with the medium "film" as such. Methods and means of cinematic communication are uncovered in diverse ways and are made the centre pieces of the films – partly playful, partly surreal and partly radical.

May 21st, 2008, 9 p.m. - Top Kino
Some things we know all too well, others we hope never to have to know at all. Six films about violence – betwixt fear and hope, power and helplessness, subservience and respect. And already in the first film Queen sing: There’s no escape from reality...

International Competition 6

May 22nd, 2008, 9 p.m. - Top Kino
Interpersonal relationships and family, youth and the first sexual experiences: The scope ranges from childhood recordings to the awakening of sexuality, from the rank within the family to first relationships and right up to the attempt to finally save the family with the help of an imaginary trip to Japan. Eight films from seven countries, whose figures are united by their shared quest for their respective places in life.
