VIS Vienna Independent Shorts

das 5. internationale Kurzfilmfestival in Wien
16.-23. Mai

Guest Festival: Fantoche

Date: May 18th, 2008, 8 p.m. + 11 p.m. - part of Animation Night
Location: Top Kino [Info]

Tickets: 8 Euro (Animation Night)

Fantoche, the international festival for animation film in Baden, was launched in 1995 as a project of enthusiasts. Today the Biennale is among the most established festivals for animation film in the world and is the biggest and most eminent event dedicated to this pulsating film genre in Switzerland.

In the area of conflict between art and commerce, Fantoche deliberately pursues the goal of sniffing out current tendencies in animation film and providing a platform for artistically daring ideas. In its international competition, Fantoche looks for animated short films, conspicuous by their aesthetics, content or technical achievement, that advance the means of expression through animation. Fantoche encourages young talents and their visions, puts the Swiss production of animated films into an international context and presents the most important productions and audience favourites world-wide. Fantoche also attaches great importance to in-depth dealing with the medium of animation, by placing emphases on various themes, examining individual aspects of animation and by building bridges to related art forms.

However, Fantoche doesn’t merely let projectors clatter and beam: exhibitions, discussion groups, lectures and workshops complement the varied film programme. Exchange and networking are highly valued and are nurtured in the uncomplicated atmosphere of the festival. Not only does this make Fantoche one of the most crowd-pulling festivals of its kind, it also provides a meeting point for the film industry.

At VIS we will screen a selection of films from last year’s Fantoche-Competition.
Hearty thanks for the invitation – have fun!

Next Fantoche: September 8th - 13th, 2009, Baden/Switzerland
