Responsive Eye
A special program by sixpackfilm.
In 1965 Kurt Kren, inspired by a painting by Viennese Op-Artist and painter Helga Philipp, created his film 11/65 Bild Helga Philipp using a series of single frame shots, suggesting movement effects. That same year the big Op-Art Exhibition The Responsive Eye took place at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The exhibition caused a sensation in the international art scene and also inspired the young Brian De Palma to shoot a genuinely funny documentary about this art and society event. The incorporated statements of the curator William Seitz, the psychologist Rudolf Arnheim, David Hockney, Josef Albers and more make this film an insightful contemporary document. a1b2c3, Study #40 and dream’sdreams, three new videos, each drawing on the Op-Art tradition in its own individual way, complete the set.
